PhotometricGlowSubtraction for PixInsight

By removing only measured star glow, 100% real structures unhide from behind it, and become easier to reveal.
Before: Auto-STF. After: Applying PhotometricGlowSubtraction with default parameters. Same Auto-STF.
This is PhotometricGlowSubtraction
PhotometricGlowSubtraction removes the glow that bright stars spread across an astronomical image. It measures your telescope’s own point spread function (PSF) from the stars in the image, out to several arcminutes. Then, using each star’s position and brightness from the Gaia DR3 catalog, it subtracts every bright star’s glow, including stars just outside the frame whose light still reaches in. The cores of the stars are left untouched, and nothing in the image is smoothed or filtered. What comes off is a physical model of the stray light, and it can be saved as an image of its own and inspected.
Why it matters: the glow around bright stars is often brighter than the faintest things a deep image is after, such as galactic cirrus, the tidal streams and outer halos of galaxies, and the faint edges of a nebula. Gradient and background tools can’t remove it, because it isn’t a gradient. It is centered on each star, a different size around each one, and it overlaps from star to star. PhotometricGlowSubtraction takes it off star by star, using the same method used in low surface brightness astronomy. It works on linear, plate-solved images, early in processing, and leaves the background for your usual gradient tool.
What about halos? PhotometricGlowSubtraction does not subtract star halos because halos are highly unpredictable optical reflections, not measurable physical characteristics of the stars themselves. Because PhotometricGlowSubtraction is built entirely around exact measurement and physical modeling rather than destructive image “filtering” (morphological transformations, AI-driven healing, etc.), halo removal falls outside PhotometricGlowSubtraction’s scope: precise mathematical subtraction based on measured physical reality. A mouthful, but accurate.
Left: Strong correction when needed. Star’s real glow is gone, optical artifacts remain. Right: Subtle correction when glow is not too strong.
Try it for free
PhotometricGlowSubtraction is not free, but you can try it for 30 days, fully functional. Every feature is available to everyone.
To use PhotometricGlowSubtraction after the trial period, you need to get your forever license below. No subscription fees! Your copy is yours to keep and use forever. You would also receive free upgrades within the major version you purchased.
Installing it, in three steps
To install and start using PhotometricGlowSubtraction:
1. Add this repository to PixInsight:
Where do I add it?
- Open PixInsight and go to RESOURCES > Updates > Manage Update Repositories.
- Click Add, and enter the address above exactly.
- Click OK to save it, then OK again to close the window.
2. Go to RESOURCES > Updates > Check for Updates. PhotometricGlowSubtraction appears already selected, so click Apply and restart when PixInsight asks.
3. You’re done. To run the process: PROCESS > DeepSkyColors > PhotometricGlowSubtraction.
DeepStarRemoval is available for all platforms: Windows, Linux, and macOS (x64 and arm64). PixInsight 1.9.4 or later is required for the macOS arm64 version. PixInsight 1.9.5 is fully supported on all platforms.
Only measured star glow is corrected. Comets (the green object in this image), galaxies, nebula, gradients, and everything else is untouched.
Data must be linear, color or grayscale, for accurate measurements.
