Welcome to DeepStarRemoval
DeepStarRemoval removes the stars from an image with a trained AI model, leaving the nebulosity, dust and background behind. Alongside the starless image it can produce a star image holding exactly the star light that was taken out, so we can process the two separately and put the stars back at the end.
DeepStarRemoval uses a neural network that runs directly inside PixInsight. The model has been trained to learn how to edit an image to cleanly remove the stars. That's all it does to your images: inpainting operations to replace stars with the sky behind them. DeepStarRemoval does not do generative AI. All it knows is your data, and a deep knowledge about how to manipulate it to make the stars disappear.
It works on both linear and stretched image, color and grayscale. It runs on the GPU if a CUDA-capable ONNX Runtime is installed, otherwise it uses the CPU. Best of all, DeepStarRemoval v1.x is free!.
The AI model is ethically sourced: it has been trained only on the author's own images and on material explicitly released to the public domain or under CC0, so it respects intellectual property by design.
Why DeepStarRemoval?
The best-known star removal tools cost money: At the time of this writing, RC StarXTerminator is $59.99 and SyQon's Starless costs $37. They're excellent, and they've earned their reputations through months and years of training and refinement. DeepStarRemoval is new, and we won't pretend a young model can match that head start on every image. What we offer is a capable tool that you can use today for free, plus a promise that it will keep improving. Every release trains the model further, and it's only going to get better. DeepStarRemoval is free and fully functional. There is no trial period and nothing expires: every feature, forever.
The free version shows a small advertisement banner at the bottom of the interface, usually promoting other Deep Sky Colors tools for PixInsight. The banner is a single clickable image; it never interrupts our work and it makes no attempt to track us. If we click on the banner, DeepStarRemoval opens our default browser with the direct destination link, without saving nor tracking any information about the click at all. Registering DeepStarRemoval removes the banner.
Installing it, in three steps
Every PixInsight process made by Deep Sky Colors is installed through DSC Hub (DSC = Deep Sky Colors), our free PixInsight process. One address gets you the hub, and the hub gets you the rest.
1. Add this repository to PixInsight:
Where do I add it?
- Open PixInsight and go to RESOURCES > Updates > Manage Update Repositories.
- Click Add, and enter the address above exactly.
- Click OK to save it, then OK again to close the window.
2. Go to RESOURCES > Updates > Check for Updates. DSC Hub appears already selected, so click Apply and restart when PixInsight asks.
3. Open PROCESS > DeepSkyColors > DSCHub. You are now looking at every process we make, with its version, what it does and what changed in its latest release. Select DeepStarRemoval, click Download and install, and restart. It appears under PROCESS > DeepSkyColors.
DSC Hub is free, it installs only what you select, and it leaves the rest of your PixInsight setup alone.
