Worth a Lifetime

It took me three trips to Maui and six drives into that road (road to Hana, a 3 hours in, 3 hours out winding, narrow road). This was the reward. A fuzzy picture of the Keanae Peninsula (the lens was fogged instantly!), but a picture that means a whole lot to me. A quote from my book Hawai’i Nights: “I have seen magnificent starry skies hundreds of times. I have also hiked many miles chasing a particular view. I don’t think I have, however, worked this hard for a view. The Keanae Peninsula is a quaint village in the windward coast of Maui, blended among taro fields with a rocky coastline to die for. After six attempts at the wet Hana coast and finding nothing but rain, clouds, tropical storms with flash flood warnings and hundreds of miles of winding roads through a tropical jungle, this time I got out of the car, stood and looked up, and for the first time ever I could see an extraordinary starry sky in one of the most paradisaical places on Earth.”
